Lanai, once called the Pineapple Island because of its bustling pineapple plantations, is the smallest inhabited island in Hawaii. At just about 140 square miles in size, only about 3,200 people call this island home. By comparison, the city of Las Vegas is about the same size and home to over 500,000 people.

Lanai is separated into three regions – North Lanai, Central Lanai, and South Lanai – which is where Inner Circle Awardees and guests will spend most of their time.

North Lanai

North Lanai is a rugged landscape best explored in a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Highlights include Kaiolohia – also known as Shipwreck Beach and home to a WWII wreckage; Kanepuu Preserve – a 590-acre dryland forest featuring native plants; and Keahiakawelo, otherwise known as Garden of the Gods, featuring unique lunar landscapes contradictory to the idyllic sand and surf that most of Hawaii is known for.

Central Lanai

Central Lanai is primarily made up of Lanai City, the island’s only settlement. Lanai City was founded in the early 1900s as a plantation town supporting its once bustling pineapple industry. In its heyday, Lanai was responsible for 75 percent of the world’s pineapple production, and the fruit is still celebrated in the city’s annual Pineapple Festival.

South Lanai

South Lanai is home to the Four Seasons Resort and the Inner Circle program. Situated between Hulopoe Bay and Manele Bay, its most famous landmark, Puu Pehe, is also known as Sweetheart Rock.

Language

The official language is English, though many natives still incorporate Hawaiian language into their everyday vocabulary.

Climate

Temperatures in May average 77°- 80° F (25°- 27° C). Water temperatures at Lanai’s beaches range between the mid 70°s F (24° C) to 80° F (27° C).*

Lanai is the most secluded of the Hawaiian Islands and falls directly in the shadow of its sister island, Maui, greatly affecting its weather conditions. Lanai never really has continuous rain showers like the other Hawaiian Islands, with most rainfall occurring in the first three months of the year. Lanai is one of the driest of the Hawaiian Islands, which explains its sunbaked appearance.
